Apprentice Firefighters

Name: Elliot

Role: Apprentice Firefighter

A bit about my role …

My current role is Apprentice Firefighter. I am currently on a scheme in which I have to complete a NVQ and BTEC over three years.

To complete the scheme I am gaining experience by being deployed into different departments across the Service. This enables me to see how each department works and the positive impact it has on the Service.

What activities do you do on a typical day?

Everyday is different for my role. This is because of my deployments into different departments. I am currently working within the Training Department and have previously worked within the fitness department. My typical day consists of supporting RDS training modules by giving visual demonstrations of operational skills and techniques. I attend a station one day a week to maintain my skill levels and further enhance my development. I am looking forward to new challenges during my next deployment at Wrexham County Offices.

What do you enjoy about your job?

The thing I most enjoy about my job is that everyday is different and I am continually learning new things and further developing my skills and experience.

Why did you choose this career?

Becoming a Firefighter has always been the dream career for me. I wanted a career in which everyday would be unique, challenging and give me the opportunity to develop myself further. Therefore, this opportunity is perfect for me.

What qualifications or experience do you think are necessary to do this job?

To be able to do this career I think it is necessary to have good knowledge in the core subjects such as English, Maths and Welsh. This is because the apprenticeship involves theoretical work and so the ability to complete work to a high standard will help. Also as the role involves working with the community the ability to communicate effectively and show respect is vitally important.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

The advice I would give someone wanting to pursue the same career is to be proactive and hardworking. Try to gain as much experience of working within the community as possible. Finally, I would also recommend trying to gain experience within the service by trying courses such as Fire Cadets in your local community.
