Smoke alarm appeal following Marchwiel fire

Posted

A Senior Fire Safety Officer is issuing an appeal to all residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their homes after a woman in her 70s was hospitalised following a fire in her Marchwiel home.

The smoke alarms in the property were linked to an alarm system, which notified North Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s control room of the fire at her home on Elwyn Drive, Marchwiel, Wrexham at 16.56hrs yesterday, Sunday May 23.

Two crews from Wrexham attended and firefighters carried the occupant outside to safety. She was treated at the scene by paramedics, and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

The fire caused 100% fire damage to the bedroom and smoke damage throughout the property. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Paul Scott, Senior Fire Safety Manager for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, attended the incident. He said:

“My thoughts are with this lady and her family, and we all hope that she will be able to make a full recovery.

“I would like to praise our firefighters who worked quickly and efficiently to rescue the lady from the property and extinguish the fire.

“Monitored systems such as the one in this property offer a valuable support system for elderly or vulnerable residents – and for all of us, working smoke alarms can give an early warning signal which can buy valuable time to get out, stay out and dial 999.

“We offer free safe and well checks for all residents – a member of the Service will give fire safety hints and tips, help you to formulate a fire escape plan and provide new alarms - all free of charge.

“To register for a free home fire safety check, please freephone 0800 169 1234 between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.”
