Junior Justice programme highlights consequences of deliberate fires to school pupils

Posted

North Wales’ Arson Reduction Team has been working alongside Theatre Clwyd’s Creative Engagement Team to create a programme aimed at highlighting the consequences of deliberate fires to primary school children.

The ‘Junior Justice’ programme, sponsored by The Scottish Power Foundation, is travelling to primary schools across North Wales over a two week period and features a short play highlighting a deliberate fire scenario and the process that follows when someone is found responsible.

Tim Owen, Arson Reduction Manager, explains: “’Junior Justice’ is a dynamic, transformative, educational workshop for young people aiming to prevent them from committing the offence of arson.

“It is fantastic that we have had this opportunity to work on such a project to educate young people on the consequences of deliberate fires, anti-social behaviour and peer pressure.

“We have worked closely with Theatre Clwyd’s Creative Engagement Team to develop this workshop and will be assisting in all the sessions.

“This workshop highlights the dangers and consequences of deliberate fires to the young people and the effects it has on the community and the Fire and Rescue Service.

“I would like to thank all involved with this exciting project.”

Director Emyr John, said: “Theatr Clwyd is really proud to be leading this latest effort educating our young people on the consequences of deliberate fire setting. By combining the best of theatre with North Wales Police and Community Trust (PACT) and the Arson Reduction Team we are determined in our aim to secure Wales’ rich environment for future generations.”

Dave Evans PACT Project Manager, added:  “We are delighted that Junior Justice is, once again, extending its reach to primary schools across north Wales. The demand for Junior Justice this year has been tremendous which goes to show how valuable schools consider the programme to be. We are particularly pleased that the Arson Reduction Team are involved in this year’s programme to addresses deliberate fire-setting. Our thanks must also go to The ScottishPower Foundation for their support.”

Ann McKeckin, Trustee and Executive Officer of the ScottishPower Foundation, said: “By exploring complex and challenging topics through drama, Junior Justice has discovered a unique way of engaging with young people.  Theatr Clwyd’s previous initiatives have proven the impact its work can have and we’re thrilled to be supporting the project again this year.”
